Myofunctional Therapy Training for Bodyworkers

Myofunctional therapy training for bodyworkers has been offered through the MyoMentor 12-Week Course from its earliest days.

Many of the students in our myofunctional therapy training course have a dental background. But we've always had some bodyworkers taking the course over the years, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists, cranial-sacral therapists, and others.

The feedback we get from bodyworkers who have graduated from our myofunctional therapy training courses is always great. They will often refer their friends and colleagues to the program.

A common question we get asked is how the MyoMentor course can be such an excellent fit for bodyworkers, given that it's taught from a dental perspective.

As it happens, dental-based knowledge is precisely what bodyworkers hope to learn on a myo course.

The information offered by this dental-focused course touches on elements of healthcare that bodyworkers aren't often exposed to in their training or their day-to-day practices.

Tongue-ties are a great example of this. The impact of a tongue-tie on the human body can be profound! It's easy to assume that a tongue-tie (or restricted lingual frenulum) might only be relevant for infants who have difficulties breastfeeding, but this is definitely not the case.

A tongue-tie can affect the entire human structure, with a strong influence on posture and movement, and of course, it can and will often play a significant role in TMJ pain, facial pain and tension, neck pain, and headaches.

It's not uncommon for patients to report substantial changes to their body almost as soon as their tongue-tie is released in a simple surgical procedure. Here's a great example of this from a patient:

“I was able to comfortably place my head on the headrest of a car and airplane shortly after my tongue-tie release. I’d never been able to do this before without straining, and suddenly, within an hour of the procedure, I was doing it without even thinking about it. It was effortless.

My chronic jaw pain and facial tension vanished within weeks, and I noticed that my posture had also changed.”

Checking for a tongue-tie is crucial to bodyworkers of all types, and knowing who to refer to for a tongue-tie release, how to prepare the patient for the procedure, and how to retrain the orofacial musculature is so essential. And that's all covered in detail on the MyoMentor course.

Correct breathing is also crucial to our overall health, and myofunctional therapy can help address underlying issues affecting breathing, including an open-mouth resting posture or a low resting tongue.

Understanding the dental perspective on myofunctional therapy gives bodyworkers additional tools to use in their practice. It helps them know when to refer their patients to other health professionals such as ENTs, dentists, and orthodontists.

Here's a testimonial from one of our recent bodyworker graduates:

“I just wanted to drop you a quick note and let you know that I am absolutely loving the MyoMentor Course. I am literally devouring all the lectures, discussions, and after class bonus materials. The breathing and sleep and restoring optimal function and understanding the root cause of issues really speaks to me. By the time Monday comes, I am counting down for the lecture so that I can get more content.

I have taken so many courses and so many online courses over the years and I am really impressed with the layout of your course. It is so well organized and so thorough. I love the way you are introducing the exercises slowly and so incredibly thoroughly. The weekly therapy sessions that you include are so helpful as a model for how a session should go. They are such valuable learning tools.

I feel like I am getting such a solid foundation and I can tell that by the time I am done with the course I will be very confident in working with clients because of the way you have structured the course and all the material and support you give.”

What Makes The MyoMentor 12-Week Course So Effective?

There are three main reasons we think the MyoMentor course is so effective and gets such good feedback from our graduates.

1. The program is cutting-edge.

All the best courses are constantly evolving and changing, and the best teachers will say that every class they teach is different. Even if you do a course today, in a year, there'll be lots of new content that wasn't covered before.

MyoMentor takes the same approach.

The field of myofunctional therapy is growing and evolving so quickly. More research is being done to change how therapists work with patients. This means it's vital that training courses evolve just as quickly.

Every MyoMentor course is different from before because Sarah's constantly updating them based on new research, protocols, and her clinical experience and techniques.

2. Our streamlined approach to therapy is a huge factor.

There are hundreds of exercises that exist in the field. But over the years, Sarah's found that patients respond better to a much simpler and more focused treatment approach, with higher patient compliance and excellent results (and increased peace of mind for the therapist).

Sarah also emphasizes precision of execution, focusing on the technique of the exercise and making sure that patients are doing the exercises correctly with no muscular compensations. This is so important to getting the best possible results in the least amount of time.

3. The course is very comprehensive.

The 12 Week Course originally started with three modules split over 12 weeks:

Module One - Symptom identification and assessment

Module Two – Treatment

Module Three - Practice management and the business of myo

But so much content has been added to the first two modules that the practice management and business aspects of Module Three are now entirely on-demand.

This means that the full 12 weeks of active learning during the course are dedicated to the clinical aspects of therapy.

And Module Three is now more comprehensive than ever and has been expanded with additional content on starting a business, insurance, networking, and professional collaboration.

Many of our MyoMentor students have already taken other courses and have been working as therapists, but they're still eager to take our course to learn the MyoMentor approach. The feedback is always that MyoMentor helped them put all the puzzle pieces together and become more effective therapists.

We're also very focused on offering continued support for our graduates.

So, in addition to our grads being part of the international MyoMentor community, we offer five different study groups, including groups for beginner and advanced therapists.

We also have our Ambassador Program designed to offer additional learning and a private Facebook group that's a fantastic resource.
